 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija 'pere April 16, 1971 - March 31 1995) was an American Tejano singer. Selena was known as the "Queen Tejano music", her contributions to fashion and music led her to be one of the most famous Mexican-American entertainers ever. Billboard magazine placed her at third in 2020 in their "Greatest Latino Artists List of All Time", which was built on Latin music and Latin albums. Some media outlets described her as the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices. She also ranks among the most influential Latin performers of all time and has been credited with bringing the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest of the Quintanilla family, she first appeared in the music industry as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, that also included her older siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. In the 1980s, she was often dismissed and had to be denied bookings at venues across Texas for performing Tejano music--a male-dominated music genre. After winning the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she began to gain the attention of her peers. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album in the same year. At the time, her brother became her principal music producer and songwriter.Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992), which peaked at top of the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. Music critics called it"the "breakthrough record" of her career due to its commercial record-breaking success. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was a smash and was her most-loved tune. Live! Live! Amor Prohibido became one the most-sold Latin albums in the United States in 1994. It was also credited as the catalyst for Tejano music's very first commercial phase. It was one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
